I still need to figure out how he can switch between paths, and though I have an idea, today I don't have the time to test it. I'm guessing by next week I'll have the wizard's path figured out, a few bugs fixed up, and maybe some other things. If all goes well I'll have a video worth showing then.
Using the same excuse everyone does, I just didn't have enough time to get a lot done, today I don't have too much to show. I tried the idea of using tiles to create paths for the wizard to take, but it didn't pan out. I had to use objects instead, though I'm kinda glad. Because I'm using objects I figured out a way to make really smooth movements through the level. Though it will be easier to understand when I post up a video but for now I'll give a simplified explanation. I created a path similar to the collision floor Terra uses to run on, on that the wizard will move. That floor will be invisible so the wizard will be flying. To make it smooth, I've created 3 marker points that also "walk" over the collision floor, and the wizard takes the average of those 3 markers which smooth out movements.

nothing too crazy to update with today. Just fixing up some bugs, and making things run smoother. I was able to get Terra to rotate with the ground, rotating forward as she moves down slopes and rotating back as she moves up them! I'm currently trying to figure out how to get the wizard (antagonist) to move through the level and know where to go. My idea is to create a path using either instances or, if I can figure this out, using tiles. If I can use tiles I can save on a little more space, and with a little more space means more room for fancy effects and higher frame rates! I want to make it as sexy as possible; I just need room to fit all my sexy into it.... I swear it isn't as dirty as it sounds...
Gosh it has been a while. I've been working at this for a while now trying to get something worth showing. I gotta say, collision with slopes are much more difficult than I imagined. I mean, how difficult is it to get a character walking and jumping around? Maybe I'm just inexperienced. But either way, I did it and I can show it off now!!! Through a combination of lack of experience and wanting to do new things, I've been doing and re-doing things a lot. It's making progress crawl. Though after a reorganization of thoughts and ideas, things seem to be moving faster. Also I think I jumped the gun on adding artwork. I think I needed a more playable game before trying to add art to it. So that's what I plan to do now. I'm going to keep programming until I get to a point where I need artwork to continue. The new things added are; pixel perfect collisions from every conceivable type of collision, placeholder animations for Terra (the protagonist), Terra's crystal able to move around while staying within a certain distance from the player, Terra's crystal being able to attack/jump forward. |
